Born in London, Ont. in 1969, J.P. Cormier fell in love with bluegrass as a teenager. That led him eventually to travel to the U.S. where he studied the genre at a university in Mississippi and performed at festivals with legends of the Grand Ole Opry like Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe.

Tonight, Cormier is in town to play a show at Artesian on 13th. Tickets are $20, and things should get going around 8 p.m. To give you a sense of what he’s like as a performer, here’s video from 2010 of him and the Elliott Brothers playing “Walk On Boy”:
