Name: Tina Beaudry-Mellor

Ward You’re Running In: 4

Current Occupation: Instructor, Departments of Political Science & Women’s and Gender Studies (cross appointed)

Voter Information: 352-TINA, www.tinabeaudrymellor.ca, @tinabeaudrymellor, facebook.com/TinaForRegina

I am a professional mother of 10-year old twins who has been living in ward 4 for the past 12 years.  I hold a BA Honors (with Honors), an M.A., and am an interdisciplinary PhD Candidate.  I have been teaching at the University of Regina for 13 years and also work as a policy consultant with Praxis Analytics. I am a very engaged member of both the University community as well as my own neighborhood.  I serve on the Community Research Unit of the Faculty of Arts, but in the past have adjudicated grants for the Sk. Arts Board as well as what was formerly the City of Regina’s Social Development Grants Board (now Community Investments), among numerous other volunteer and professional commitments. I am also a frequent political analyst for various print, television and radio media.

I am running for City Council because I kept hearing the same issues raised by residents of this area at my kid’s school, the football field and over professional networks.  These two issues were the need for a high school in our area as well as the need for the SE Bypass.  Rather than continue to wait for these issues to be addressed, I decided that I could – and should – add my voice to those advocating for these issues.

QUESTION AND ANSWER

1. Briefly, why are you running for council?
Because there are things that need to get done in ward 4 and rather than wait for someone else to do it, I thought, “why not me?” I am also really excited about the momentum in Regina and want to be a part of keeping it going.

2. What is the single most pressing issue facing Regina? How would you solve it?
Catching the infrastructure up to our growth with limited resources.  I would like to see an inventory and prioritization process for our infrastructure needs so that we can plan ahead.

3. Imagine the Regina Of The Future that you want to help build. What will it look like?
I am pretty excited about some of the things that are happening now like Sk Fashion Week, Break Out West and the success of local young entrepreneurs.  I would like to see Regina continue to be the place where young people want to stay because we offer all of the amenities of a more cosmopolitan big city with more affordable standard of living.

4. Beyond immediate concerns like housing, the stadium and infrastructure renewal, what “big idea” project do you want to work on that nobody seems to be talking about?
The joint high school for ward 4 and the SE Bypass.

5. Name something the last council got right.
The Design Regina process was a great example of community engagement! I also still feel that the I Love Regina campaign has been central to some of the positive developments in our city over the past few years.  I am also a fan of the City of Regina App and the City’s electronic/social media citizen services in general.

6. Now, point out their biggest mistake.
The management of City Square Plaza, which I am hearing a lot about on the doorsteps.

7. What are you reading these days?
Margaret Thatcher’s biography “The Iron Lady”

8. Beyond your residence, do you own any property in Regina or in the immediate area?
No.
