Busy day in the CFL apparently.

After 17 seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders offensive lineman Gene Makowsky (pictured) announced today that he would be retiring. Makowsky, of course, was elected for the Sask. Party in Regina Dewdney last November. With his retirement, the 38 year-old will be free to concentrate on his MLA duties full-time.

With the recent free agent signings of two young offensive linemen (Brendan LaBatte and Dominic Picard) it’s also an indication that the Riders have fully embraced a youth movement in an effort to return to playoff contention — if not in 2012, then in 2013 when the Grey Cup will be played in Regina.

More on Makowsky’s decision here.
