The troublemaking hockey scallawag best known for a really tasteless comment about an ex-girlfriend has hella redeemed himself with this video supporting the right of gays and lesbians to marry their beloved same-sex partners. Behold:

It’s a shame that one Canadian player agent doofus used this lovely moment to take a public stand against same-sex marriage. Todd Reynolds of Burlington, Ontario-based Uptown Sports Management — which represents NHLers including Chris Neil, Mike Fisher and Jonathan Bernier — tweeted the following unintentional comedy from his agency Twitter feed, @uptownhockey:

“Very sad to read Sean Avery’s misguided support of same-gender “marriage”. Legal or not, it will always be wrong.”

Nice. And:

To clarify. This is not hatred or bigotry towards gays. It is not intolerance in any way shape or form. I believe we are all equal…

Uh huh. And:

But I believe in the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman. This is my personal viewpoint. I Do not hate anyone.

Yup, and some people believe people of different races shouldn’t intermarry and there’s nothing wrong with that either.

How often does it need to be said? Some people are born gay. Happens all the time. It’s not weird. It’s not contagious. It’s not dangerous or immoral. It’s not a big deal. Stop embarrassing yourself, get over your kooky, old-fashioned prejudices and fears and find real problems to worry about. Sheesh.

My favourite read on this incident is here. Enjoy. And again, hooray for Sean Avery! Now, when will a brave NHLer step out of the closet and into history?
