Winnipeg’s NHL Team Is (Almost) Officially Official

This afternoon, the NHL board of governors approved the sale and move of the Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg. All that’s left is for the cheque to clear, and that should happen tomorrow.

One pleasing sign of the sixth seventh Canadian team’s reality is the arrival of the still-unnamed team’s official Web page on Yup, almost brings a tear to this old guy’s eye.

Now all they have to do is name the team the Winnipeg Jets (none of this “Manitoba” nonsense, please!) and I’ll buy a jersey and even consider switching my longstanding allegiance away from my lovable, loseable Columbus Blue Jackets. Jackets. Sigh! <3

  1. Why the hate on for a Manitoba team? Provincial inclusivity seems like a good way to increase the number of fans in the province (which could help increase revenue).

  2. 1.) Because, tradition!

2.) That’s just the way it is.

The relationship of a Winnipegger to Manitoba is profoundly different than the relationship of a Reginan to Saskatchewan. With more than 50 per cent of the provincial population and at least 12 times the size of the next largest centre (Brandon), Winnipeg is basically a city-state and the people who live there tend to identify with it more than they do with the province.

In fact, growing up, everyone I knew was born in Winnipeg. I’ve lived in Regina for 13 years and the majority of people I know here moved to Regina from a smaller centre. That creates a stronger provincial identification.

I’m a Saskatchewanian now but I used to be a Winnipegger, not a Manitoban. So, Winnipeg Jets. Because really, they will be.

  3. Putting “Manitoba” in the name seems silly. No, what we want is the return of the Avco World Trophy Champion Winnipeg Jets! And the New England Whalers, and the Quebec Nordiques…. aw hell just bring back the WHA.
