“Our democracy is a light, a beacon really around the world because we effect change at the ballot box and not because of these, you know, outbursts of violence in certain cases, and the yelling and you know, it’s just, we know change is important, it’s part of our process, and it’s really important that we focus on the fact that we have a democratic process.” –Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords

If this shooter — apparently a young male — turns out to be a Tea Party member, then this conservative movement — which has been goddamn seen ignorantly fomenting violence by everyone who’s not fucking stupid or blind — needs to disband in shame.

A MESSAGE TO OUR READERS The coronavirus pandemic is a moment of reckoning for our community. We’re all hurting. It’s no different at Prairie Dog, where COVID-19 has wiped out advertisements for events, businesses and restaurants as Regina and Saskatchewan hunker down in quarantine. As an ad-supported newspaper already struggling in a destabilized media landscape, this is devastating. We’re hoping you, our loyal readers, can help fill in the gap so Prairie Dog can not only continue to exist but even expand our coverage — both in print and online. Please consider donating, either one-time or, even better, on a monthly basis.

We believe Prairie Dog's unique voice is needed, now more than ever. For 27 years, this newspaper has been a critical part of Regina’s social, cultural and democratic infrastructure. Don’t let us fade away. There’s only one Prairie Dog. If it’s destroyed, it’s never coming back.

Author: Stephen Whitworth

Prairie Dog editor Stephen Whitworth was carried to Regina in a swarm of bees. He's been with Prairie Dog since May 1999 and will die at his keyboard before admitting this was all a terrible, terrible mistake.

  1. Even if the young man in custody is not directly affiliated with the TEA Party and their ultra-conservative allies, if he was “inspired” by the increasingly inflammatory speech coming from the far Right, they bear a lot of the blame nonetheless. And I think they know it.

Watch the far-right try to backpedal on their inflammatory speech of the last few years. Watch them try to deny that calling their opponents – whether Dems or moderate Repubs – un-American and traitors leads to violence. Watch Palin try to explain that she wasn’t *really* calling for people to shoot folks she disagreed with when she put their photos up with crosshairs on them.

The whole mess makes me sick. What is my country coming to?
