Nine individuals and one team are being inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame this year. The team is the 2007 Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders, while the individual atheletes and builders include NHL veteran Orland Kurtenbach (pictured), Canadian Olympic swimmer Mike Mintenko, hockey player Fiona Smith-Bell and softball player Donna Veale.

Kurtenbach is probably the best known name out of all the inductees. I remember him from the time he spent with the expansion Vancouver Canucks. But prior to joining them in 1970 he played ten years in the NHL with the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs. He has what has to be considered one of the all-time great hockey names, on par with a rangy 6’6″ centre who played for the German national team around the same time named Erich Kuhnhackl.

The induction ceremony goes Saturday at Conexus Arts Centre, with a reception at 5 p.m. Tickets are $50. For more info call 780-9232.

And to get the memories flowing, here’s a video recap of the 2007 Grey Cup in which the Riders triumphed over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 23-19.
