Most Sunday nights in Regina the bar scene is pretty quiet. But with nightspots having been closed Friday and Saturday night to accommodate Christmas Eve/Day there’s probably a fair number of thirsty Reginans out there.
If you’re looking to check out some live music while slaking your thirst, here’s some gig options: at O’Hanlon’s Pub Tinsel Trees are playing with Bright Black. At the Exchange In Darkness headlines with Kelevra and Lest We Fail. At the Cathedral Village Freehouse, Def 3 is doing a DJ set and also performing hip hop. For those of a certain vintage, there’s a tribute at the Distrikt to the famed ’80s and ’90s nightspot Checkers (which was located in the old Landmark Inn on the site of the current Shoppers Drugmart in south Regina). Finally, at McNally’s Tavern it’s Leather Cobra.
Tribute to Checkers! Does that mean they’re going to tear the toilets seats of the toilets and piss and barf all over the floor?! Seriously though, that type of “gritty” New York fetish would be SO IN right now. RIP Checkers, I definitely miss it. That sort of cheap brown decor, crappy chairs, dim lighting, deck with the water slide tube jutting in. All bars are kind of gay, promoting narcissistic me-so-cool behaviour, but Checkers had its moments. Slake it, baby.
