Pick of the Day (Tomorrow Edition): Austra

Regina’s had a pretty decent run of live music lately. This is another show to add to the pile. It’s at the Exchange Wednesday night, and features as headliner the Toronto-based trio Austra (pictured). The group is composed of Katie Stelmanis (vocals, piano), Maya Postepski (drums) and Dorian Wolfe (bass), and they were short-listed for the 2011 Polaris Prize  for their album Feel It Break. To give you a sense of what they’re like, here’s Austra performing “Beat and the Pulse” at SXSW in 2011.

Also on the bill is Tasseomancy. The band is fronted by twin sisters Sari and Romy Lightman who used to be known as Ghost Bees. Here’s the video for the single “Heavy Sleep” off their 2011 album Ulalume.

I believe Young Galaxy is also on the bill. Fronted by Stephen Ramsay and Catherine McCandless, Young Galaxy were formed in Vancouver in 2005. In 2009 they released their second full-length Invisible Republic on the Arts & Crafts label, and were subsequently long-listed for the 2010 Polaris Prize. Here’s a video from a few years ago for their tune “Outside the City“.
