Quebec director Xaxier Dolan won the Jury Prize at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, and created waves at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall, with this film about a single mother struggling to raise her troubled teenage son. That didn’t translate into success in the lead-up to the Academy Awards, though, as Mommy failed to make the short-list of nine films selected for the foreign language film category.
