We think Becky and Maya should hijack the Junos

Perennial Prairie Dog crush band and former cover girls, Becky Black and Maya Miller a.k.a. The Pack A.D., are nominated for a big ol’ Breakthrough Artist of the Year award at the Junos — huzzah! They’re also playing at JunoFest and presenting the Rock Album of the Year award — whew. The Pack A.D. are a real live wire of a blues-inflected punkish rock band and if you haven’t caught their live show before, don’t miss your chance this time around. I spoke with lead singer and guitarist Becky a couple of weeks before the big weekend and tried to stir up some shit.
I see that you’re sharing the stage with fellow nominees Monster Truck as part of Juno Fest. Are you planning on trash talking them?
Oh, you know, it’s probably a good idea, but no I wasn’t. That would be fun though! They’re really nice guys actually, so I wouldn’t do that.
Oh well, maybe a Twitter battle or something?
Yeah, I guess that would be interesting for people, but I don’t know, I think that would be mean.
Yeah, you guys are nice-seeming. And you’re presenting ‘Rock Album of the Year’. How did that come about?
We were just asked if we wanted to, and we said “…no”, and then they forced us into it. Naaah, we said yes.
Do you have to come up with your own gag for that, write your own lines for whatever you’re gonna say?
I don’t know yet. Apparently there’s a rehearsal so we’re going to be able to rehearse what we’re going to say.
I feel like you should come out on stage there, somehow, with guitar and drums and show them what rock n roll is first…?
Yeah, if they’d allow it.
…And then say, ‘yeah, we’re taking this home’.
Album of the Year goes to…us! Though we’re not in that category.
Not sure if you care about this at all, but it’s something I’d think about: do you know what you’re gonna wear?
I don’t know yet, and yes this is a really difficult decision for…the women. Very important; I don’t know though.
You can never go wrong with a band t-shirt of a band that you love and wanna promote more, or something like that? Like, YOUR OWN BAND MAYBE?
Ha, yeah we’ll wear our own shirts, actually we’ll wear all our own merchandise, like the hoodies and shirts, have our beer cozies and stickers plastered everywhere, yeah…
Maybe you could also sorta Frisbee your CDs out into the audience too…
Yeah, that would be the way to go.
I hear that you guys are great big comic nerds. I should mention that the Prairie Dog team are big into comics. Any recommendations?
Whew, well, I’ve been re-watching the 90s X-Men animated series… if you want to get into nerdery, we’re both really into Magic: The Gathering, which is probably even sillier than comics.
At this point the conversation devolves into a discussion about Magic: The Gathering versus the murder mystery game known as Werewolves, as well as the merits of Jurassic Park 3D. Be sure to catch The Pack A.D. when they pull out all the rock n roll stops at The Exchange on Saturday, April 20, and tune into the live Juno broadcast on Sunday.
