Java Jabber Cracks 400

Not long ago, Regina’s greatest coffee news publication cracked 400 issues. Congrats on that, whoever is responsible! The Queen City wouldn’t be the same without you.

They went about it in fine fashion, too, sticking to the same jokes that really seem to be pulled exclusively from email forwards and strange layout predicated solely on filling those pages with words, damnit. Fewer jokes than usual that assumed the existence of God, but they’ve given whole pages before to Jesus stories, so they’ll make up for it in the long run.

I wanted to throw one of the jokes from the 400th issue on the Dog Blog, because I felt it was just a perfect Java Jabber joke. Sic throughout:

Chain Saw

A man walks into a hardware store and asks for a chain saw that will cut 6 trees in one hour. The salesman recommends the top of the line model. The man is suitably impressed, and buys it. The day he brings it back and says, “This chainsaw is defective. It would only cut down 1 tree and it took ALL DAMN DAY!” The salesman takes the chain saw, starts it up to see what’s wrong, and the Iowan says, “What’s that noise?”

The Java Jabber sticks to classic comedy structure here, waiting until the very end of the joke to reveal what seems to me to be the true and obvious punchline: Wherever they copied this joke from, they had enough sense to change “the Iowan” to “the man” throughout, except for that last, wonderful mention.

  1. Speaking of comedy James, are you able to cover the Rider game against the Argos at Mosaic Stadium on Sept. 17 at 2 p.m.?

  2. The Prairie Dog Blog needs a new regular weekly feature, ‘Sarcastic Jabs at Local Small Business’.

  3. If you check page C5 of today’s Leader-Post, you’ll see a photo accompanying an article on the Swaggerville hype coming out of Winnipeg that identifies Barrin Simpson as a member of the Blue Bombers. Simpson, of course, joined the Riders from Winnipeg in 2010, and is in his second season as the team’s middle linebacker. LOL.
