Jack Layton Battling Cancer … Again

Jack LaytonJack Layton has announced he’s temporarily stepping down as Official Opposition leader, after announcing today at a Toronto news conference that his cancer has returned. (New Democratic Party of Canada official statement)

Some others who caught the video of the press conference told me that Layton didn’t look that good. Gaunt, shaky, lost a lot of weight …

Since he didn’t specify the cancer, my journalistic instinct tells me that it’s the type of cancer you don’t come back from. I hope I’m wrong, at least for the sake of his family … but I somehow doubt it.

UPDATE: Charlie Smith of the Georgia Straight says Layton’s choice for interm leader is to forestall a leadership battle — and it shows he doesn’t expect to be back.

  1. What most people don’t realize is that there are very few cancers you ever do come back from. Oh, they may buy you a few years with chemo and treatments, but cancer’s very rarely ever beaten, sadly.

  2. I was shocked when I heard the news. There will never be another “Jack Layton”. God Bless, Jack!

  3. Wishes for a speedy recovery, Jack. I really hope my worst fears are not founded…

Whenever I hear something like this, I think of my father-in-law and my uncle, both of whom had prostate cancers metasticize (?) into bone cancer. Both of them had been to their doctors recently, had the blood test, and it was missed – which apparently is not uncommon. They died within the year and it was painful and hard on both of them.

I would not wish that on my worst enemy. Jack, I hope you can defeat this once and for all, and live a long healthy life.

  4. While he may look gaunt, if he’s already undergoing treatment it makes sense for him to look poorly, chemo and radiation takes a round out of you like nothing else.

I hope the resting to fight this off helps and he’s back on the Hill in time for the next session.

  5. I am the miles away from ever voting NDP and would never support any of their programs. Nevertheless, Jack Layton is a very good leader and a very good man. I can put down my politics to wish Jack good luck with his treatment and hope he finds the right path in life.Whatever you think of Layton , the man is a fighter.Fight on Jack.Best wishes.
