How Trudeau Do

This is just too good.

It’s embarrassing anyone disagrees with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s insistence on a minimum 50/50 male-female cabinet but they do, apparently. Not a big fan of picking on different generational cohorts* but… I guess maybe Canada really needed younger people in government. I didn’t vote Liberal this time (hugs to my dear friend April Bourgeois), but maybe the best party did win. We’ll see!

  1. How nice to read an article quoting Sandi Urban-Hall; I remember her fondly from our days as school trustees. Now THERE was a level of government where gender parity was a regular occurrence.
Cabinet appointment is one thing; cabinet performance is another. The women just appointed know that, like it or not, fair and reasonable or not, they’re under extra scrutiny. How they comport themselves in their new responsibilities will determine whether the principle will be carried forward or will bend as political expediency dictates. The same can also be said of the aboriginal, Sikh and Muslim members.
What I think we need to divest ourselves of is the naive idea that simply electing or selecting a woman (or minority of any description) to serve in public office will automatically usher in a new and enlightened era. I give you Margaret Thatcher and Barack Obama as examples of how that just isn’t the case. And just for Stephen’s benefit, I note that that misconception has been around for more than a generation.
Like any other Canadian, I am going to watch and see how our new government does before I judge.
