Downtown Transportation Study Open House

Short of relocating downtown Regina to the outskirts where access roads, streets and parking lots can be reengineered on a Harbour Landing scale to accommodate all the commuters and shoppers driving over-sized vehicles (as one mayoralty candidate has actually proposed) creating smooth traffic flow in the area in this era of potential growth and renewal is a daunting challenge.

Nonetheless, the city has embarked on a Downtown Transportation Study to “identify and evaluate options to improve conditions for all users including pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, automobiles and delivery vehicles.”

March 1 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. there’s an open house at the Cornwall Centre to gather public input. Phase 1 will examine operational challenges and opportunities and look for short-term solutions to facilitate traffic movement on 11th and 12th Ave, including whether City Plaza (pictured above) should remain pedestrian only. Phases 2 and 3 will look at longer term strategies to perform the miracle of allowing the vast majority of Reginans to access the downtown in their cars and trucks in a safe, super-quick and convenient manner while simultaneously encouraging alternative modes of transportation like those noted above.

  1. Hold on! Before we embark on a downtown transportation study, we need a study to study this proposed downtown transportation study. This study, which I call The Downtown Transportation Study Study(DTSS), will study the effects of the March 1 open house on transportation in the downtown. This study will only take two years and is guaranteed to cost less than $500,000, although it may well cost double that – especially if the study takes more than two years, which it probably will, because the contract will have gone to an Ontario firm known for producing excellent studies on the desirability of exurban spaces and the tax benefits of creating vast downtown dead zones watched over by domed arenas like the unblinking Eye of Sauron.

    90% of that place is full of zombies that care more or less zero abut municpal issues.

  5. Ron….You say the Cornwall is full of ‘zombies’…a brilliant statement, sounds like it came from my teen. However, a zombie is what one becomes after driving around downtown for an hour looking for a parking place. When I grew up and got my drivers and bought a car I gave up downtown because of the parking issue. Or lack of, so frustrating. I hope the library expansion will include a parkade.

  6. Anon #5: But there are parkades downtown. Corwall has one. The Hill Towers have one. There’s one on… Rose? I think it is? And then there’s the city hall parkade which is free to the public after work hours and on the weekend. And then if you go less than a block south of Vic, most of that entire entire neighbourhood is surface parking. It’s like a frickin’ moonscape. A moonscape for your car!

    I will concede Regina does one of the worst jobs of letting drivers know where parking can be found of any city I’ve lived in.

    But, over 40 percent of the downtown is given over to parking. And I don’t think that figure includes on-street parking. How much more parking can your car possibly need?

    And! Our downtown is really frickin’ compact. If you park one block east of Broad or one block west of Albert, you can walk to anywhere downtown in like five minutes.

    I don’t get this not enough parking downtown thing. There’s SCADS! of parking downtown.

  8. Paul – so sorry about your head ache due to the explosion. 40% given to parking downtown? link please… most parkades I know of are full of employees who have the misfortune of working downtown. (my old office, Avord)
    I’m so sorry I don’t want to stand on a wind swept corner waiting for a bus in -30 or pouring rain or whatever. I had to do that when I was a kid.
    How about I meet you tomorrow, 2- ish, and I will follow you to one of the many parking places you know about.

    To my eyes, that’s more than 40% of downtown that’s blued out as parking. But the number that gets thrown around at council is 40 so I use that. And note, on-street parking is not marked on that map.

    As for the bus… I never suggested you should wait for one. I suggested that instead of parking right at your destination, you could park a few blocks away and walk.

  10. When people say there is no parking downtown they really mean to say there is no FREE parking downtown but don’t want to say it. Suburban malls have spoiled us into expecting free parking and folks still get mad when they have to park farther than 50 feet from the front entrance to walmart.Pitiful. How can downtown compete.

  11. Ron – Thx for the downtown parking link, I will study it. Maybe something out there I am unaware of. But I doubt it.
    I have needed to hit a shop on Hamilton near Tower 3 const. site st. twice the past few months. Yikes. Had DH drop me & circle the block till I was finished. He was ticked. Me too.

  12. Just because you can’t park exactly outside of the spot you want to go to downtown DOES NOT MEAN THERE IS NO PARKING DOWNTOWN.

    #6 really? Scads? On my few as needed trips downtown, I mabye find a spot around Garnet and 12th,at the closest, ( and a 2 hr limit ). I never bother with the Transitional ‘hood, on a weekday but on the weekends,it’s usually easier to park.

    #8 Mabye a new mayor could add: Heated Bus Stops to his platform.

    #10 I would say that the last 4 City councils spoiled the Mall developers with cheap acres for parking lots, and road access, but no real expanded transit to these malls ,so people drive. And did next to zero for the downtown. I moved from here many years ago and returned in 2003. Man, 1/2 of DT is missing. No Movie theaters?? What? 8 restaurants?
    11 ave is the only thru bus route, and there is parking and car traffic on the inside lanes? WWTTFFKK?

  14. I’m a cheap bastard spoiled by free parking and I refuse to pay for parking unless I really have to. That said, there have been multiple times where I’ve had to circle the Cornwall area to find a spot, even a paid one at that. A lot more frustrating than rolling up to a suburban mall/mini-mall, finding a spot right away and parking for free.

  15. I’m pleased the City wants to study my thoughts, but they will seem strange to the City, and I am concerned they will try to probe me as they would alien lifeforms. Am I joking? You decide.

  16. But, once you roll up to the suburban mini-mall you will have to restart your car and DRIVE to your next parking lot 50 feet away. It’s a ped nightmare that shouldn’t be considered a transportation solution. Paying a couple bucks for parking and walking a couple blocks is the least of our sorrows really.

  17. Regina’s downtown is compact, and obviously full of parking. This issue is no longer up for debate, as Paul has clearly shown. There is also an abundace of free 2-hour parking that extends from the South East side of Victoria avenue. It is approximately one dollar per hour to park downtown. Cheaper than the University, which runs a buck and a half. Also perhaps the Prairie Dog Blog is the wrong vessel for your complaints about downtown seeing as the mag has been an avid support system for the area since it began. As per number 5’s comment about hoping the library has a parkade… there is parking RIGHT OUTSIDE. I think the issue here is that you just don’t want to walk the possible 2 or 3 short blocks to get your read on.
