Does Winnipeg Get An NHL Team Tonight?

I dunno, no? Maybe? Yes? Here’s the dilly-o:

Instead of allowing the franchise to relocate to Winnipeg, the City of Glendale wants to offer the NHL $25 million to stick around another year. That $25 million is to subsidize anticipated losses for the 2011-12 season and comes immediately on the heels of the city recently writing a $25 million cheque towards losses for the 2010-11 season.

Pouring cold water on this vote is the fact that one investor, Ice Edge Holdings, just pulled out this afternoon. Another investor has been unable to get the deal he wants to buy the team. The whole thing’s basically a mess.

The most interesting hockey game tonight will be in an Arizona city council chamber, not a rink. The fun starts at 8:00 and will be live-blogged by the Winnipeg Free Press here.

  1. If Phoenix was a Baskin-Robbins they would have closed up shop ages ago. I don’t get this whole thing, never have.
