31 Days Of Music: “Holiday Eyes”

In these days of wine and leftovers, when we begin to fear that we won’t be allowed to board our return flight because we’ve eaten so much Toffifee that we no longer resemble the person we were back when our photo ID was issued, it’s nice to listen to Howe Gelb.
I’m kind of a big Howe Gelb fan, a Giant Stan, if you will. But even I’m shocked at how much music the dude has released this year. Check out his Bandcamp page for more info. “Holiday Eyes” is from Melted Wires, a digital-only release that came out in November, and features guest appearances from several members of Calexico, some of whom are former members of Giant Sand.

  1. this reminds me of the similar confusion of whether bob dylan was a poet or songwriter as the writers of this song used every cliche available to them (heavy emphasis on the dominant 5th) to portray a possibly well written lyric. it is hard for a long term songwriter to consider this as “well written music”
    as difficult as this may be to find or as “underground” as it may be really doesn’t take away from the fact that it is the same thing we, as listeners, have been exposed to for hundreds of years, with a different voice and maybe a different recording technique.
    this gets a dislike from me

    I appreciate your input. I hear what you’re saying about “well written music”, and I’m curious to hear which songs of 2010 you do think are well-written.
    In general, this listener often finds “well-written” music dull and unengaging and would often rather hear someone playfully tweaking cliches or irreverently tearing down the very idea of profiency. With specific regard to “Holiday Eyes”, this recording has not been commercially released in the traditional sense (Howe Gelb is asking US$2.22 for the whole album online) and is part of Gelb’s ever-expanding catalog of what I consider to be songs-in-progress. Throughout his career, Gelb has often recorded songs several times over, always with some difference: sometimes a different band formation, sometimes a different arrangement, usually with lyrical changes. As a fan of Gelb and his work, I appreciate his songs in this context, there’s pleasure in the process as much as the product.
    That said, it’s certainly not to everyone’s taste, and I really do appreciate your feedback, John!

  5. Wow, Suspiciously Familiar Sounding Anonymous…. How does “thanks for reading”, “appreciate your input” and “it’s certainly not to everyone’s taste” translate as defensive? Sure there’s a mild jibe in comment #2 and an expansion on the reasoning behind the OP in comment #4…. and that’s enough to get your back up? If this is what counts as being biting and defensive in your book, methinks you haven’t spent enough time on the internet.
