Karrnnel is one-quarter of the roots instrumental quartet The Fretless. Along with fellow violin/fiddle players Trent Freeman and Ben Plotnick, cellist Eric Wright and guest vocalist Madeleine Roger they released their latest studio album, The Glasswing, in mid-September. To mark the occasion, here’s six favourite songs from Karrnnel.
“Light On”
Maggie Rogers, Heard It in a Past Life (2018)
I’ve been a fan of Maggie Rogers since she first jumped out on the scene. My wife and I worked up a little duo cover of this song for a dear friend’s wedding, and now this song forever takes me back to that bank of magical memories from the wedding week in Hawaii. YouTube
“The Wishing Tree”
John Doyle, John McCusker and Mike McGoldrick, The Wishing Tree (2018)
This tune is so damn good! Three of my favorite trad instrumentalists that have been playing music together forever finally released an album together, and it is superb! This is track one from the album, and right from the first listen I had to grab my fiddle and (attempt to) play along! YouTube
“Walking on Broken Glass”
Annie Lennox, Diva (1992)
This old jam went a long time between regular rotations for me, but over the last few years it has turned into my energy boost song on long runs. It’s a banger! YouTube
“Fear”
Begonia, FEAR (2019)
This song perfectly paints a picture with sound of what fear sounds like. My wife, son (Jagger) and I had this album on during some home workouts over the years, and now this song takes me back to another magic memory bank doing push-ups, etc. with a two-year-old on my back. YouTube
“Better Place”
NSYNC & Justin Timberlake, Trolls Band Together soundtrack (2023)
This is currently my son’s favourite song, and the joy that it brings him singing along and dancing is firmly planting this song as one of my favourites for years to come. It is also rare to listen to a song hundreds of times with your kids and still like it. YouTube
“Lovin’ Arms”
The Wood Brothers, Loaded (2008)
This song is one I always play/sing whenever I grab a guitar. Such a ridiculously good band and great individual musicians coupled with a melody and lyrics that melts me every time I hear it! YouTube
