“Autumn Leaves”
Cannonball Adderley, Something Else (1958)
I remember the first time I listened to this. I was 13. I played trumpet so I thought I should check out Miles Davis (who plays on this record). I pressed play on track one and was immediately transfixed. To me, it’s one of the greatest intros ever. Full of mystery and beauty. YouTube
“Can I Sleep In Your Arms Tonight”
Willie Nelson, Red Headed Stranger (1975)
This recording convinced me of the power of the three-chord song. I had been obsessed with jazz standards through junior high and high school, then I heard this. I knew immediately I wanted to get a guitar and start writing songs. It was all there. Simple and perfect. YouTube
“People Get Ready”
Aretha Franklin, Lady Soul (1968)
Lady Soul may well be the greatest album ever. Perfect songs, incredible band, great production, all led by Aretha Franklin, the best vocalist ever. If there’s any question as to why she’s the Queen of Soul, just listen to this track. Just when you think she couldn’t take it any further she blows the roof off. It’s magic and gives me goosebumps every time. YouTube
“September”
Earth, Wind & Fire, Single (1978)
An absolute master class in songwriting by one of my all-time favourite bands! Hook after hook, awesome musicianship, infinitely danceable. The reason it’s still a hit today! Love it. YouTube
“In The Summertime”
Roger Miller, Golden Hits (1965)
It’s important to remember that music can be loose, playful and fun — especially when you’re writing music. It’s easy to feel bogged down. When that happens I throw on this song. Roger Miller wrote all sorts of songs: “King Of The Road”, “Husbands and Wives”, “Little Green Apples”. But on this one he really lets it fly. Check out the scat solos!! So musical and so free. “Brown-Eyed Women”
Grateful Dead, Live Cornell (5/8/77)
When I’m cooking, this is what I listen to. It sounds like a band that is having so much fun. And I love Jerry Garcia’s solos. Playing music with friends has always been one of my greatest pleasures. This performance kind of brings me back to that fundamental feeling. YouTube
