“Go First” Damien Jurado Caught in the Trees (2008)
Like some of the other songs I’ve chosen, “Go First” is sad, emotional and beautiful. Something about sad, heartfelt songs make me feel my best. Probably because I can relate to them and they help me feel less alone.
“Keep It With Mine” Nico The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967)
I really got into older music when I was in high school and completely fell in love with Nico, Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground. Even though this song was originally played by Bob Dylan, I prefer Nico’s rendition. Something about it makes me feel light and happy.
“Trying Your Luck” The Strokes Is This It (2001)
The Strokes are one of my favourite bands. I started listening to them in high school (due to teen angst), but they’ve held a top spot as I’ve grown up. “Trying Your Luck” is the perfect song for any occasion. It can feel sad, angry, or it can just be plain fun!
“Coxcomb Red” Songs: Ohia The Lioness (2000)
Everything Jason Molina (the singer) has ever put out is absolute genius and totally heart-wrenching. My mom really loves this song too and would play it a lot while I was growing up, so it also has an air of nostalgia for me.
“New Highs New Lows” Charlie Brand Monsoons (2015)
This song just has a really mellow tone to it and is very easy to listen to. I’m pretty sure this is the only album this artist has out, which is a shame. There really isn’t much more to say about it other than it’s a great tune.
“Fisherman’s Blues” The Waterboys Fisherman’s Blues (1988)
I first heard this song in the movie Dom Hemming (movies are where I get most of my musical taste from) and thought it was so interesting. I love how this song transports you to a totally different place. Like, I’ve never been a heartbroken Scottish fisherman in the 1980s, but this song sure makes me feel like I have!
