Anna is an alternative rock musician from Saskatoon. Her album Coasting In Dreams is available now online and on vinyl. The summer ahead is shaping up to be busy for Anna and her band as they’ll play Saskatoon Pride in June, Ness Creek in July, and the Regina Folk Festival in August. Here are six songs she considers favourites. /Gregory Beatty
“He Can Only Hold Her”
Amy Winehouse
Back to Black (2006)
Amy is one of my all-time favourite artists. The voice, the lyrics — incomparable! This song stood out to me when I first heard the album because of its catchy Motown vibe and memorable words. I also enjoy the backing vocals and horns in this song immensely.
“Middle of the Bed”
Lucy Rose
Like I Used To (2012)
The first time I heard this song I knew I’d found another artist I’d be a life-long fan of. Lucy’s sweet voice and folky upbeat songs appealed to me straight away. The catchy chorus hooked me and the strong songwriting made me want to hear more.
“Angel From Montgomery”
Bonnie Raitt
Streetlights (1974)
The great John Prine wrote this song, but Bonnie’s version was the first I remember hearing and it has a special place in my heart. Bonnie is a fantastic vocalist and guitarist, and I’ve looked up to her for years. Her smooth voice adds so much to this song, and I never tire of listening to it.
“Move On Up”
Curtis Mayfield
Curtis (1970)
I call this one my favourite song. It’s a fantastic song to groove to. It’s funky and fun, and Curtis’ vocals round out one of the best soul tunes of all time! It’s a pump-up jam like no other.
“Next Stop”
Bleached
Ride Your Heart (2013)
Bleached is one of my favourite current bands. They’re sisters from LA who write super cool rock songs, and their live shows are unforgettable. This tune would be perfect for a road trip.
“Think”
Aretha Franklin
Aretha Now (1968)
The queen of soul nailed it with this one! I have fond memories of singing back-up vocals on this tune with a Motown cover band I’m in. Great song!
