With the Regina Symphony Orchestra last Masterworks concert on Jan. 23, the feature composer was Tchaikovsky. With this concert, another well-known Russian composer is the focus: Sergei Rachmaninoff.
He was 20-years old when Tchaikovsky passed away in 1893, and undoubtedly would have been influenced by his countryman as part of the Romantic period of Russian classical music. In addition to being a composer, Rachmaninoff was also an extremely talented pianist. And that instrument typically figures prominently in his compositions.
The feature work at this RSO concert is Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with guest soloist Alexander Tselyakov. Also on the bill is Goldmark’s Rustic Wedding Symphony and a work by Canadian composer Marjan Mozetich called Postcards from the Sky.
The concert goes at Conexus Arts Centre on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. You can get more information on the RSO website. And here’s audio of Rachmaninoff playing a 10 minute excerpt from his concerto recorded in 1939.
