I don’t have any polling information to back me up on this, but I suspect if you were to quiz a bunch of ballet-challenged people and ask them to name an actual ballet, Swan Lake would likely come out on top — although if the quiz happened around Christmas time The Nutcracker might get the nod.
Both, as it happens, were choreographed to scores written by Russian composer Pytor IIlych Tchaikovsky.
Swan Lake debuted first in 1876, and is based on a series of Russian folk tales. The ballet tells the story of a princess named Odette who is turned into a swan by a sorcerer’s curse. While in human form, she meets a prince named Siegfried, and they fall in love. But her habit of periodically transforming back into a swan puts a serious crimp in their romance.
On Sunday May 10, the RPL Theatre will host a screening of a performance of Swan Lake by London’s Royal Ballet. Curtain is at 2 p.m., and tickets are Adults $15, Seniors $12 and Students $10. To close, here’s a short trailer
