The feature work at this RSO concert, which goes at Conexus Arts Centre Satuday May 9 at 8 p.m., is Carmina Burana by German composer Carl Orff. It dates from 1936, and was inspired by a suite of 24 poems that are part of a much larger collection written by students and clergy between the 11th and 13th century. Most of the poems were written in Latin, and their tone is described as bawdy, satirical and irreverent.
Following its debut in 1936, Orff’s composition quickly became part of the classical canon. “O Fortuna” is the opening and closing movement, and it’s been used in several different films including Excalibur, Speed, The Doors and Last of the Mohicans.
To perform Carmina Burana, the RSO will be joined by soloists Allison Arends (soprano), Paul Williamson (tenor), Peter Alexander (baritone), along with the Regina Philharmonic Chorus and the Halcyon Chamber Choir. Also on the program is Arcadiac by contemporary Canadian composer Nicole Lizee which is inspired by video games.
