Born in Calgary in 1970, Kinnie Starr is a pioneer in Canada’s hip hop and spoken word communities. Helping to inform her artistic identity is her aboriginal ancestry on her father’s side, and her bisexuality which has endeared her to members of the queer community. She’s also not shy about addressing other political concerns such as the environment.

On September 30, the Sechelt, B.C. artist released her latest album From Far Away. Currently, she’s on a cross-country tour that involves a few shows with David Suzuki who is on the road with The Blue Dot Tour. That hits Regina on Oct. 27. Starr won’t be in attendance that night, but she is playing a show at the Exchange on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
