Based in New Bedford, Mass., this hardcore band has been around in various incarnations since 1996. They settled on the name A Wilhelm Scream in 2002. The name refers to a Hollywood term for a stock sound effect of a man screaming. The sound effect, in turn, took its name from a character named Private Wilhelm who was shot with an arrow in the 1953 western The Charge at Feather River. The scream, which is believed to have been recorded by actor Sheb Wolley, has been used in over 200 movies since then — sometimes as a legit sound effect, other times as an inside joke in various films and TV shows.

Anyway, the band, which has six albums to its credit, is in town to play a show at the Exchange Wednesday night. Sharing the bill is a Milwaukee punk band called Direct Hit!.
