This Masterworks Concert by the Regina Symphony Orchestra goes Saturday at Conexus Arts Centre at 8 p.m. The feature composition is Rimsky-Korsakov’s musical interpretation of the story of Scheherazade from One Thousand and One Nights. After his first wife was unfaithful to him, the story goes, a Persian king decided to marry a virgin every day and have her beheaded the next day so he could marry anew.

To avoid suffering the same fate, Scheherazade conspired with her sister to tell the king a gripping tale that she was unable to finish before the next day dawned. By continuously feeding the enthralled king a new story each day she managed to stave off her execution. She kept that up for 1001 nights until she ran out of stories. You can probably guess what happened next.

In addition to the piece by Rimsky-Korsakov, the RSO with be joined by guest artist Marco Sartor (guitar) who will perform a concerto by the Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo. Also on the program are works by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi and Canadian composer Tim Brady. The latter work is titled Three or Four Days After the Death of Kurt Cobain.

To give you a taste of Sartor’s talent here’s video of him performing a work by composer Astor Piazolla:
