Co-presented by New Dance Horizons, the Regina Folk Festival and Le Conseil Culturel Fransaskois, this Jan. 22 performance by PPS Danse of Montreal pays tribute to the late New York-born, Quebec-based folk singer Lhasa de Sela. Born in 1972, de Sela also spent time in Mexico and France. She released her first album La Llorona in 1997, and went on to release two other albums (The Living Road in 2003 and Lhasa in 2009) before succumbing to breast cancer at the age of 37 in 2010.
Other career highlights included Felix and Juno Awards as a Quebec and Canadian recording artist, and participation in the Lilith Fair tour organized by Sarah McLachlan. Following her death, Pierre-Paul Savoie designed and choreographed this show which uses music, spoken word and dance to reflect on the life and art of Lhasa de Sela.
Danse Lhasa Danse will be held Wednesday at University Theatre. Doors are at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $30 advance and $40 door. To give you a preview here’s a teaser trailer from 2012:
