atkins_secretworld7If you saw the Amanda Cachia and Jeff Nye curated exhibition Mind the Gap! at the Dunlop Art Gallery in 2009 you might remember a film installation by this Saskatoon-based artist called Scenes From A Secret World. It was a surreal tale (photo above) about a young woman who stumbles across a vaguely menacing/tragic creature while picking apples at night.

If you missed Mind the Gap!, or don’t recall the work, you’ll have an opportunity to see/revisit it in this exhibition at the MacKenzie Art Gallery. Also on display are two other works by Atkins: Three Minute Miracle (2008), and a projection based on her new film we live on the edge of disaster and imagine we are in a musical.

Atkins recently finished a residency at Open Space Gallery in Victoria, and this is the first major solo presentation of her art. There’s an opening reception tonight at 7:30 p.m., and an artist’s walk through Saturday at 2 p.m. The exhibition will run until June 14.

Also on tonight there’s an artist talk and reception at the Dunlop Art Gallery for B.C. artist Ian Johnston’s exhibition Reinventing Consumption. The talk goes at 6 p.m. in the RPL Film Theatre, with the reception following at 7 p.m.
