France is the third largest market for films in the world behind the U.S. and India and the largest in Europe. It has also influenced generations of filmmakers and some of the greatest of emerged from there. Jean Vigo, François Truffaut, Jean Renoir, Louis Malle, Michael Haneke, Jean-Luc Godard and Marcel Carné just to name a few.
That said it has also produced some of the all time greats in the horror genre. Trouble is I have already done several of my favourites in past 31 Days of Horror segments. Eyes Without a Face, Les Diaboliques, Haute Tension, Grapes of Death and Le Pacte Des Loups. There are a few classics still to choose from but editor Steve wanted something animated and what do you know there just happens to be a recent French animated horror film.
Peur(s) du noir aka Fear(s) of the Dark is an animated anthology film. The movie is directed by several notable comic creators. Blutch, Charles Burns, Marie Caillou, Pierre di Sciullo, Lorenzo Mattotti and Richard McGuire all direct the various segments.
There are five segments with a narrator kind of connecting all the different stories. While there are several different art styles, all the animation is in black and white. The effect is a creepy and eerie film. Some of the segments work better than others, which happens in anthologies but the overall effect is a pretty creepy film.
