Unlike Saskatoon, which has an opera company to call its own, Regina is not a big opera town. So opera-lovers here typically have to travel to other centres to see full-scale productions or else content themselves with the live HD broadcasts of the uber-lavish New York Metropolitan Operas that the Galaxy shows from time to time.
Tonight, though, as part of their Masterworks Concert Series, the Regina Symphony Orchestra is presenting a gala performance featuring excerpts from several well-known operas with a special focus on Verdi and Wagner. Joining the orchestra will be guest soloists Won Whi Choi (tenor), Marie-Eve Munger (soprano), Wallis Giunta (alto) and John Brancy (baritone), along with the University of Regina Choirs under the direction of Dominic Gregorio.
The gala is tonight at Conexus Arts Centre at 8 p.m., and proceeds will go to the RSO’s Education & Outreach Fund. To close, here’s video of the opening act of Verdi’s Otello as performed by an opera company in the Netherlands:
