Regina ThunderIn their home opener last Sunday afternoon the Regina Thunder scored a convincing 42-23 victory over the Calgary Colts — traditionally one of the Prairie Football Conference’s elite teams which went 8W-0L last season before falling 24-21 to the Thunder in a semi-final match-up.

The game marked the debut of Thunder head coach Scott MacAulay, and the team certainly started off on the right foot for him, roaring out to a 35-6 half-time lead on the strength of four TD passes from QB Asher Hastings to receivers Jacob Carr (two), Brady Keller and Will Heward, along with a pick six from DB Landon Walter.

Tonight, the Thunder face another stiff test as the Saskatoon Hilltops are in town (Mosaic Stadium, 7 p.m. kick-off). Last Sunday, the three-time Canadian Junior Football League champion Hilltops also started their season off on a winning note with a 32-20 victory over the Winnipeg Rifles in Saskatoon.

Following tonight’s game the Thunder will have a bye, and then they’ll lock horns with the Hilltops again in Saskatoon on Sept. 7.
