Holy moly! This arts and crafts show has been around twice as long as Prairie Dog has in Regina. Yes, this year marks its 40th anniversary.
If you’ve been to Bazaart on the grounds of the MacKenzie Art Gallery before you probably have a pretty good idea of how things work. If you haven’t, you can find out more here. What it boils down to, though, is a whole swack of Saskatchewan artists and crafters getting together to showcase their wares. In addition to all the ceramics, jewellery, glass and wood work, sculptures, paintings and whatnot on display, there are plenty of other attractions ranging from a stage hosted by the Regina Folk Festival to buskers, food booths and a children’s area.
Bazaart is billed as Saskatchewan’s largest outdoor arts and crafts fair. Attendance last year was in the 6000 range, and this year there will be 130 artisans on the grounds. In addition to all the outdoor activities, Bazaart also offers a great opportunity to check out the MacKenzie’s indoor programming. Feature exhibitions this time around include How We Filled The Vault which traces the evolution of the gallery’s permanent collection as part of its 60th anniversary celebration, and Greatest Hits: The Juno Tour of Canadian Art where musicians like Tegan & Sara and Sarah Slean picked art works and paired them with songs of theirs to explore parallels between music and art.
Bazaart runs today from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the MacKenzie. Admission is $5, with Children 12 and under admitted Free.
