Following a series of high-profile moves in the off-season, the Toronto Blue Jays were highly touted heading into the 2013 Major League Baseball season. But a week and a bit in, the team sits last in the American League East with a 3-6 record following an 11-1 pasting at the bats of the Tigers today in Detroit.
Fans, hyped by the 20th anniversary of the last time the Jays won the World Series on Joe Carter’s ninth inning walk-off home run against the Phillies, had high hopes this would be the year the team finally ended its 20-year playoff drought. So they are understandably restless. And some of their venom is being aimed at manager John Gibbons who is on his second tour of duty with the Jays. Some are even calling for him to be shit-canned as manager.
I’m not a huge baseball fan or anything. But after all the moves the Jays made in the off-season, I can’t say I was impressed when general manager Alex Anthopoulos signed Gibbons to replace John Farrell when he returned to Boston to manage the Red Sox. If the Jays continue to struggle I wonder how long Anthopoulos will stick with Gibbons?
