A miscarrying Indian woman who died from blood poisoning in an Irish hospital after being denied an abortion died because staff bungled her diagnosis and didn’t give her prompt treatment, a jury unanimously ruled Friday in a case that has divided Ireland.
That’s the first paragraph of a CBC report on a coroner’s inquest that has just reported on the Oct. 28 death of a 31-year old East Indian woman named Savita Halappanavar who experienced serious problems in pregnancy and despite the pleadings of her husband Praveen was unable to obtain a termination. Her husband had pleaded with doctors at University Hospital Galway to do the procedure, but they refused while the 17-week old fetus still had a heartbeat.
