The University of Regina Cougars women’s basketball team went 19-3 in Canada West conference play and finished the season ranked #2 in the nation. The Cougars then proceeded to win the Canada West Championship at a four-team tourney in Calgary on March 1-2. The team is hosting this year’s national championship, which goes at the Kinesiology Centre at the university March 15-17, so they were guaranteed a spot in the tourney anyway. But by securing the Canada West title they went in through the front door as opposed to qualifying through the back door like many teams who are the host team at national championships typically do.
Seven other teams will be joining them on the hardwood in Regina, including the defending champion Windsor Lancers, the McGill Martlets, Carleton Ravens, Calgary Dinos, Fraser Valley Cascades and St. Mary’s Huskies. Rounding out the field will be the wildcard pick the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
The action starts at 1 p.m. today with #1 ranked Windsor playing #8 Ottawa. At 3 p.m. Calgary plays Carleton. At 6:30 p.m. the Cougars play McGill. The final game of the opening round goes at 8:30 p.m. with St. Mary’s against Fraser Valley. Tournament passes are $50 Adult, Student $25 and Children 12 and under $15. Single day passes are $20, $10 and $5. More information can be obtained here.
