We posted on this a few days ago, but after deciding that the three-story icicle that had formed outside an apartment building in Saskatoon posed a safety hazard to residents and passersby, Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services on Thursday ordered it to be removed within 24 hours.
Unfortunately, as you’ll see if you check out this Star Phoenix report, the ice monster declined to go down without a fight. After a day of hacking and chipping at it with chain saws and sledge hammers, the icicle had been reduced to about half its former height. So crews would be returning today to finish the job.
As for the property owner, they’re out several thousand dollars to have the mini-glacier removed — it’s a stiff price to pay, but as the article notes preventative maintenance could have been done for a few hundred dollars when the problem first arose.
