Donald Richie was an author who specialized on Japanese cinema. He wrote several books about Japanese movies, his more popular ones being The Japanese Film: Art and Industry (1959), The Films of Akira Kurosawa (1965), Ozu: His Life and Films (1974) and A Hundred Years of Japanese Film (2001).
I was familiar of his work because of his collaboration with the Criterion Collection, he did many commentaries and essays on several Kurosawa films. He also did the subtitles for Kagemusha and Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams.
Donald Richie passed away Tuesday February 19, 2013 at the age of 88.
