ABORTION HAS BEEN UNEQUIVOCALLY LEGAL IN CANADA FOR 25 YEARS TODAY Story here, and here’s a quote quoted in that story, from the judges’ decision: “Forcing a woman, by threat of criminal sanction, to carry a fetus to term unless she meets certain criteria unrelated to her own priorities and aspirations, is a profound interference with a woman’s body and thus an infringement of security of the person.” Thank you Pierre Trudeau and company for the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It’s tragic Canada’s done nothing comparably visionary since.

THEY’RE BAAAAACK Members of Parliament return to the House Of Commons today and here is the news about that.

ONTARIO GOT A NEW PREMIER THIS WEEKEND Saturday’s story here and here, and a great column here. Wait, that’s not a great column–it’s a must-read column for anyone who’s forgotten (or didn’t know) how homophobic Canada was just a few years back. Sometimes real progress really happens!

I DESPISE EXTREMISTS A pack of troglodyte Islamists have torched irreplaceable artifacts in Timbuktu. This reminds me of the time the Taliban blew up the Bamiyan Buddhas. Even without getting into the much more serious murder, mayhem, homophobia and brutal misogyny, Islamists suck colossal ass.

AFTER THE FIRE Three people, including one of the club’s owner, have been arrested after a nightclub fire in Santa Maria, Brazil killed 231 people this weekend.

DID YOU SEE THE SQUID? I saw the squid! Biologist PZ Myers live-blogged the squiderry, and boy, that guy sure wanted more squid. Still: Giant freaking squid! Hooray!
