Born in Paris in 1903 to an American socialite mother and British father, Diana Vreeland (nee Dalziel) began her career in fashion in the early 1930s when she operated a high-end lingerie boutique in London. In 1937, she and her husband moved to New York with their two sons and Vreeland took a job with Harper’s Bazaar . Through her work there, and later at Vogue magazine she had an enormous impact on fashion in the Modernist era.
Vreeland died in 1989. This 2012 documentary explores her impact on not just fashion, but also notions of art, beauty and culture in general. It screens tonight and Saturday at the RPL Film Theatre at 9 p.m., and Friday and Sunday at 7 p.m. To give you a sense of what it’s like here’s the trailer:
