Two years ago, the local performance company Curtain Razors collaborated with Mammalian Diving Reflex out of Toronto to present Haircuts By Children. As the title implies, it involved a group of kids offering their skills as hair stylists at a local salon for a couple of days. If people wished they could book an appointment with them and get their hair done. As a performance piece, it offered people the opportunity to consider issues like child labour and the traditional division of authority between adults and children in our society.
Eat the Street is another collaboration between Curtain Razors and Mammalian Diving Reflex. This time, a group of 12-year-olds have been enlisted to pull an Aidan Morgan in prairie dog speak. For the last week they’ve been dining at local restaurants and, like food critics do, offering their evaluation of the food, service and overall condition of the restaurant. Tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Artful Dodger they are holding their gala awards ceremony. Tickets are $10, and can be obtained in advance at Mysteria Gallery or at the door.
Bonus Pick: If music is more your thing, Grassroots Regina is presenting the Winnipeg-based singer-songwriter Cara Luft. Luft first made her mark as a member of the Wailin’ Jennys, and she’s currently touring in support of her latest album Darlingford which was released in April.
