For the last few year, the MacKenzie Art Gallery has been holding an annual fall fundraiser that involves an auction featuring work by local artists along with a variety of other fun activities.
Typically, there’s a theme tied to an exhibition at the gallery. Last year, it was Hard Rock & Heavy Metal. This year, the gala, which goes on Friday Oct. 19, is linked to the exhibition Big Bang Theory which is set to open at the gallery on Oct. 27. It’s curated by Timothy Long, and explores the phenomenon of nerd culture. The exhibition title is derived, of course, from the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory which features as its main characters several CalTech scientists who have a huge obsession with science fiction and comic book culture.
Those are subjects that we here at prairie dog know virtually nothing about. But in the interests of broadening the scope of our knowledge we will likely attend the show and perhaps even review it at some point. As for Friday’s gala, the theme, as described by the gallery, is “geek chic or superhero wow”. It goes at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $90 for gallery members and $100 for non-members.
And to test your own chops on nerd culture, anyone want to venture a guess on who the above-pictured super hero is and what movie she appeared in?
