QUESTION AND ANSWER
1. Briefly, why are you running for council?
I am running for city council to make a difference in my community. As the chair of the RAAC and the president of the WPCA I have had the opportunity to talk with many Regina residents and listen to their concerns. I have tried to help as much as possible through my various volunteer roles, but have come to realize that major change can only be accomplished through policy and budgetary changes. This can only be instituted by council.
2. What is the single most pressing issue facing Regina? How would you solve it?
The single most import issue facing Regina is the shortfall in Infrastructure. The city already has a process of prioritizing roads, so the only answer to this problem is increasing the department’s budget. Who has the worst road or biggest pothole has been a long standing joke in Regina, it’s time for council to make this a priority by being pro-active, and not reactive.
3. Imagine the Regina Of The Future that you want to help build. What will it look like?
It would be a vibrant city with a solid infrastructure on which to build our future. By vibrant, I mean it would have a thriving arts culture that would draw people to Regina. It would be a city that other cities would envy. There would be a combination of old and new architecture that would be harmonious and complimentary, not competing. This would include accessible public works of art interspersed throughout the city for the enjoyment of all.
4. Beyond immediate concerns like housing, the stadium and infrastructure renewal, what “big idea” project do you want to work on that nobody seems to be talking about?
The city of Regina is currently undergoing a Community Investment Review process where they are redefining how and what public money is spent on. I believe as part of this process Arts and Culture funding should be increased as it hasn’t changed in many years. Also as a part of this process more money should be made available for community associations to produce more community events, such as bbq’s and family days.
5. Name something the last council got right.
I believe the I Love Regina campaign was a great success. This can be seen by the pride people take in their city and by the number of people interested in running for Councillor and Mayor in the upcoming election. People do love Regina and believe Council has made a great start at revitalizing this city and want to continue what they have started.
6. Now, point out their biggest mistake.
Not focusing enough on infrastructure and not protecting heritage sites within the city.
7. What are you reading these days?
Just finished Conversations on the edge of the apocalypse, and just started Nelson Mandela’s Conversations with Myself.
8. Beyond your residence, do you own any property in Regina or in the immediate area?
No I do not, technically I don’t own my property the bank owns most of it.
