Kill, Baby, Kill or as it’s also known as Operazione paura, Curse of the Dead, Curse of the Living Dead, Don’t Walk in the Park and Operation Fear is a 1966 eerie gothic horror film from director Mario Bava (Black Sunday, Bay of Blood).
Inspector Kruger (Piero Lulli) is called to a small village after several deaths have all turned up the same eerie find. They all have a silver coin lodged into their hearts. Dr. Paul Eswai (Giacomo Rossi-Stuart) and his lovely assistant Erika Blanc have been called in by the inspector to perform the autopsies. They soon discover that the town is reluctant to help, almost like they are hiding something. And then there’s the local witch (Fabienne Dali) who may have something to do with the coins. It seems that she might be responsible for the coins but not the deaths. As for the deaths, it seems Baroness Graps (Giovanna Galletti) might be seeking revenge on the town for the death of her daughter and maybe her daughter’s ghost is still around, lurking in windows, looking for the next victim.
This is a creepy and atmospheric horror film. Bava builds the right amount of tension and keeps the viewer guessing to what’s really going on. Bava made several horror films in the ’60s and ’70s before his death and quite a few of them are excellent, a couple are even classics. His films were usually cut up and messed with when they were released in North America. And being an Italian production it’s better to see the film in the original language rather than the crappy English dubs. Fortunately most of the films have been released on DVD and Blu-ray uncut with the original soundtracks.
