Organized by the National Gallery of Canada, a retrospective exhibition by First Nations artist Carl Beam (1943-2005) opened at the MacKenzie Art Gallery on Sept. 1. It runs until Nov. 18, so you still have plenty of time to see it. But this weekend the gallery is hosting two events related to the exhibition.
Tonight at 7:30 p.m., there will be a reception with the exhibition curator Greg Hill in attendance. Then on Sunday at 2 p.m. there will be a screening of the documentary Aakideh: The Art and Legacy of Carl Beam.
Born in Ontario of Ojibwe descent, Beam spent time in residential school as a child, and as an artist used a collage technique incorporating archival photographs and contemporary imagery to explore the history of colonialism in North America.
