I’ve always thought “Tubthumping” was a savagely sarcastic song. Back in the day, I remember arguing with people* about this. Really people? Verses like “don’t cry for me Argentina next door neighbour” in the middle of song about binge-drinking macho idiot sports fans fighting in bars aren’t examples of the band’s vicious contempt of apolitical brick-brained louts?

*I’m pretty sure it was Janzen (who actually listened to other Chumbawamba songs**) but it might’ve been Penner. Either way, it was some lovable Winnipeg post-Mennonite loudmouth. (p.s. I love you guys.)
