The actual centennial of the 1912 Regina Tornado is on June 30. So technically, it was outside the street dates of our June 14 issue and should have more properly been covered in our June 28 issue. But since the events to commemorate the tragedy get going Tuesday night, I decided to use my discretion as guest editor for that issue to make it our cover story.
Here’s a link to the four articles that were part of our coverage (scroll down past the scrumptious duck photo to get to them). They look at the history of the tornado, severe weather in an era of climate change, Regina’s ambivalent attitude toward its history and heritage, along with a rundown of tornado-themed arts and other community events that are being held in the days and weeks to come.
If you check the last article (History Brought to Life) you’ll see that a guided tour of the downtown area where the tornado struck is being held tomorrow night. It’s being co-presented by Regina Plains Museum, Prairie History Room, Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild and other organizations, and begins at the Plains Museum at 6:30 p.m. To register call 777-6120.
There’s a whole pile of other stuff happening. So if you get a chance, check some of it out.
