In February, German painter Gerhard Richter celebrated his 80th birthday. At auction, his paintings, which range from abstract expressionist to photorealist in style, sell for tens of millions of dollars. With this film by Corinna Belz, we gain an insight into Richter’s past (he was born in Dresden, and fled East Germany just a few months before the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961), and get to watch him in studio as he manipulates paint on large-scale canvases to create new work to be shown at over-lapping commercial gallery and museum exhibitions.
Gerhard Richter Painting screens at the RPL Theatre tonight at 9 p.m. Here’s the trailer.
