No pick-of-the-day today. Instead, I’ll give you a heads up on the Shotgun Super8 Film Festival which is happening at Creative City Centre on April 1 at 7:30 p.m. I’m no filmmaker myself, but I know that Super8 was a popular medium back before the invention of video cameras. Compared to conventional 16 and 35 mm film it was cheap, easy to use, and was a home movie staple in the 1960s.
For many indie and studio filmmakers, it’s how they got their start, producing no-budget epics in their backyards as kids before graduating to more sophisticated film and camera technology in college and the professional ranks. For them, Super8 not only holds a certain nostalgic charm, it also offers them the opportunity for artistic exploration.
With this event, local filmmakers and other artists sign on to create short films. They can range from mini-dramas to quirky comedies to abstract experiments in light and movement. Regardless of your taste in film, there’s bound to be something for you to enjoy.
So if you get a chance, drop by CCC Sunday night and check it out. Participating filmmakers include Ian Campbell, Amber Christensen, Berny Hi, Ryan Hill, Rob Hillstead, Marcel Petit, Gerald Saul, and Daniel Suchoboki. Tickets are $5 at the door.
