The original tale about the young star-crossed lovers from Verona was published by English playwright and poet William Shakespeare (pictured) in 1597. Aside from the original theatrical version, there’s been numerous adaptations in art forms as diverse as ballet, opera and film.
This version of Romeo & Juliet is being presented by Do It With Class Young People’s Theatre and, as conceived by Andorlie Hillstrom, is set in a post-apocalyptic future deciminated by a third world war. The Capulet family is apparently rural-based while the Montagues are urban-dwellers. There’s also an original score by Robert Ursan with an electronic/punk style.
Romeo & Juliet goes at Shumiatcher Hall in the lower level of Conexus Arts Centre Feb. 14-16, with performances at 12:30 and 7:30 p.m. For ticket information call 525-9999.
